Sarawak Land Consolidation and Rehabilitation Authority (SALCRA) Managers
Sematan , Sarawak
Bobby and Nelson have witnessed firsthand the important role that cultivating oil palms has played for the community around Sematan, Sarawak. As managers overseeing large estates, they work on a daily basis with the small farmers in the region who rely on their cultivation of oil palms to provide for themselves and their families.
Nelson manages one of the local estates, the Stenggang Oil Palm Estate, while Bobby manages the entire Bau-Lundu region, which comprises of 5 separate estates. Together, they assist small farmers in meeting the high cultivation standards required by the Sarawak Land Consolidation and Rehabilitation Authority (SALCRA) while also representing the needs of the small farmers they oversee to government and private sector officials.
Bobby and Nelson have seen the region transform thanks to the development of SALCRA plantations and the empowerment of small farmers. Where once only a couple thousand hectares were cultivated, now more than 10,000 hectares are planted with oil palm. And thanks to this development, roads have been constructed linking communities and bringing the small farmers closer to markets. Meanwhile, schools, clinics and homes have been built alongside more prosperous communities, where some families are even able to send their children abroad for higher education.
